Solid Earth and Planetary Geophysics

International collaboration

Sky and Earth by ESO and NASA

The research themes of Solid Earth Geophysics and Planetary Geophysics are aimed at geophysical research of the solid part of the Earth, planetary bodies, asteroids and meteorites. The research in Solid Earth Geophysics deals with thermal conditions of the Earth’s crust and lithosphere, paleomagnetism, plate movements, and rock physical properties. Applied fields of research comprise reflection seismic studies in mineral exploration, geothermal energy, and studies related to disposal of spent nuclear fuel in crystalline rock. Planetary Geophysics research concentrates on physical properties and reflectance spectra of meteorites, micrometeorites and asteroids.
